Always Carry Back-up. Reliable Internet (almost) anywhere!
Life as a digital nomad family comes with its fair share of incredible moments—exploring new cultures, soaking up stunning landscapes, and sharing unforgettable experiences. But behind the picture-perfect scenes is a layer of careful planning and adaptability, especially when it comes to staying connected to the internet.

Why a Backup Internet Device is a Must for Digital Nomad Families
As remote workers and homeschoolers, our family relies heavily on a stable internet connection. It’s not just for work calls and deadlines—our son Emerson’s homeschool program depends on it too. So, what happens when the internet goes out or is too slow to meet our needs?
We learned early on that having a backup internet device is not just convenient—it’s essential.
The Reality of Unreliable Internet
On our current adventure in Costa Rica, we’ve experienced firsthand how internet connections can be unpredictable, especially in more remote areas. There are days when the local network is fast and smooth, but then a sudden storm or power outage can cut us off entirely.
Without a reliable backup, a work deadline or homeschool lesson could be derailed in seconds. For families like ours, who live and work on the go, that kind of disruption isn’t just inconvenient—it can be stressful.
Enter the Starlink Mini
We have used other, smaller devices in the past. Maybe you’ve seen our previous posts about one in particular.
One of the best recent investments we’ve made as a digital nomad family is the Starlink Mini. It’s been a game-changer. Whether we’re nestled in the jungle or staying in a coastal town, this compact satellite internet device has allowed us to stay connected when nothing else works.
For me, it means I can meet my deadlines, manage our travel blog, and keep sharing tips with our readers. For Mandy, it’s the peace of mind of knowing she can help Emerson stay on track with his online homeschool program, no matter where we are.
It’s also super small, about the size of the iPad Pro that I work on everyday, so even as a minimalist family it fits in our luggage, and our lifestyle.
How It’s Helped Us Stay Connected
At the time of writing this, we’re staying in a beautiful but remote area of Costa Rica. The local WiFi was spotty, cutting out for hours at a time. While this could have meant a day full of frustration, the Starlink Mini saved the day.
I could continue working seamlessly, and Mandy helped Emerson continue his to learn how to type without interruption (at least from the internet connection lol). Even during a heavy rainstorm, the Starlink Mini kept us connected, allowing us to focus on what matters most—making memories while keeping our commitments.
A Lesson in Adaptability
Being a digital nomad family teaches you to think on your feet. From navigating local grocery stores to adapting to different time zones, flexibility is key. Having a backup internet solution is just one more way we stay ready for anything.
Another element of flexibility that the Starlink Mini has opened for us is the ability to work off-grid in the case of a total power outage. Because the mini is designed to be used on the go, it requires so little power that it can be powered by a portable power bank, and with the Roam plan (we have the Unlimited Roam plan), it can be used in different locations and even while driving (up to 100mph!). Of course, don’t drive and email, but if you have a second driver who can take over while you handle some work stuff (or write a blog), that’s really cool!
We want to share this lesson with other families considering a similar lifestyle: If staying connected is vital for your work or your child’s education, don’t leave it to chance. Investing in a tool like the Starlink Mini could make all the difference.
